INKS

It's the weirdest thing to Ink your own work. In Chasing Amy they made fun of the inker Banky and called him a tracer. I'll be honest with you, it does feel a lot like tracing, but at the same time, there is almost nothing more important than the inker next to the penciller. Simply because the inker is the person who will dictate how good the piece looks in the end. If you have a tight penciller, you'll probably have a good piece to work with if you're an inker. A loose penciller may leave more for the inker to decide in terms of finishing the piece with line weight and such, so let's not diss on the inkers, OK?

Doing my own inks has been an interesting experience up to this point. First off, it's not like pencils. If you mess up, it's pretty much up to the white out to cover that stuff up, no erasers here. Also, you have to have a steady hand. I think it is for this reason that many inkers are people who can draw too. I know there are some people who can draw and can't ink, but most inkers can draw. Art Thibert, Scoot Williams just to name a few.

Recently I just invested in a WACOM Graphire (refurbished, hahahaha). I tried to do some digital inking with the tablet and all in all it's pretty cool, but the work area is real small and my hand tends to stick to the tablet. Thinking of making an add on to it so I can glide my hand freely, but we'll see how that goes. There's lots of potential there since it allows me to work with a variable line weight that my technical pens do not allow and it also fixes the bleed issue I get from inking on standard photocopy paper as a result of printing for blue lines.
